Shipping Hazardous Materials
Do you make rush shipments of product via air transportation? Nearly every company does. Be very careful of the products you ship, because you may be unwittingly violating the law by sending items that may be classified as hazardous materials (Hazmat) by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). While shipping oxygen cylinders or a box of butane lighters by air is clearly dangerous, other items such as perfume, paint and fuel pumps are some not-so-obvious products also identified as Hazmat by the DOT. If the product is Hazmat and not properly labeled and packaged, your company is likely to be assessed a hefty civil penalty when the item is discovered during shipment.
