Microphone Helps Pastor Juggle Dual Roles
By: Frances Putman Pastor Gregg Kennard likes to move around as he delivers his Sunday morning sermon to the congregation of Saint David's Community Church in Lawrenceville , Georgia . As part of the services, Kennard is often involved in the musical worship as well. Ideally, he likes to move seamlessly from his role as pastor to musician and back without a myriad of microphone changes. Right now, Kennard is leading services in a 6,500-square-foot store-front facility in the Discovery Mills Mall in Gwinnett County , just north of Atlanta . The space includes a worship center, as well as several other rooms used for various ministries and children's activities. Saint David's is a progressive church, started in 1999 by Kennard as part of NOW Ministries, which is headquartered in nearby Conyers , Georgia . It's an inter-denominational church, drawing from many different areas within the Christian church. Saint David refers to David of the Old Testament, who was fallible, but used by God for great things. The church, whose membership includes a diverse mix of varied age, race and socio-economic status, first met first at a local high school before moving into a strip-mall space in the Shannon Oaks Shopping Center . Right now, the church is in transition and is meeting at the Discovery Mills Mall, though the church is considering another move to a larger facility. Kennard said it has been a great experience for the church, meeting in an unconventional facility, like a mall. "We're attracting a lot of people that we wouldn't otherwise," he said, noting that coming into a mall is not as frightening to some people as walking into a traditional church. "The mall is comfortable," he noted. The church is involved in many outreach projects, including offering counseling and financial assistance to people in the nearby community. It also partners with other non-profit community programs, like the Salvation Army and AIDS awareness groups to provide help where needed. Saint David's works with groups like Habitat for Humanity, The American Red Cross, Rescue Atlanta, Safe House, Mission of Mercy and The Quinn House, a facility offering help for substance abuse. The church worked closely with the Salvation Army and was an Atlanta-area hub for providing relief assistance to those Gulf Coast residents affected by Hurricane Katrina in September. Each Sunday, more than 200 people pour into Saint David's Church for Pastor Gregg's message. It's a bit crowded sometimes, and the acoustics are not always the best, but Kennard wants to make sure everyone can hear the message clearly and without bothersome outside noise or obstruction. Over the years, he has been frustrated by microphones that interfered with the worship experience. There were some that limited mobility or had poor sound quality, and other over-the-ear types that never felt or sounded exactly right. "Every two to three minutes, I'd have to adjust them," Kennard said, pointing out that it caused needless interruptions in the worship process. A few months ago, Kennard turned to Gene Byce, Jr. of Jireh Supplies, Inc., www.jirehsupplies.com , also located in Lawrenceville, for advice. Byce considered Kennard's situation, including the relatively small space where his church's worship services are held and the fact that the acoustics are not of the highest quality. Finally, he recommended the VT700, manufactured by Voice Technologies, as the right choice for Kennard. The VT700 head-worn microphone fits over both ears, instead of just one, and it is lightweight, comfortable and unobtrusive. "It stays in place much better than a lot of others," Byce said. "And, it has a superior sound quality." The VT700 has a flexible gooseneck that enables the user to position the microphone for the best sound and gain before feedback. "I like the fidelity and the sonic range," noted Kennard. "It has a real crisp sound." The cable runs neatly behind the neck, which means no one ever sees it, and a perspiration drip ring on the gooseneck keeps the microphone capsule dry. The easy-to-clean headband fits securely and is highly resistant to corrosion. And, Byce said, units can be pre-configured to work with various wireless belt packs, including those manufactured by Audio-Technica, Shure, Sennheiser and many others. "It's been marvelous," Kennard said. "It has a secure mouth location and is comfortable. I'm confident it will stay in place." While no one microphone is right for every person or in every situation, Byce has gotten a lot of good feedback from those using the VT700. In its price range, he considers it to be one of the best two-ear designs. Kennard definitely thinks it has been best for him. As a minister and musician, he doesn't have time to waste on adjusting microphones. "With this one, I just put it on and don't think about it anymore," he said. |
