Hertz’s new stack chair, the SCP-2000, is hand-constructed from 1¼” molded and laminated European beechwood. Doweled (not screwed) front and rear braces, plastic glides and a rear book pocket are standard. Renewing the sanctuary of a historic church can present a greater challenge than outfitting a new space. It requires sensitivity to the original style and period of the interior architecture as well as respect for current liturgical norms. Conrad Schmitt Studios was asked to renew the spiritual environment of this historic church with an embellished decorative scheme, as well as a new altar, ambo and baptismal font. The most dramatic modification was the addition of a decorative molded plaster ceiling, which draws the eye upward and toward the altar. A warm color palette and gilded accents were chosen to create a welcoming environment for the church. The font, altar and ambo are inspired by the existing architectural style, and they incorporate marbleizing, gilding and stained oak. The original high altar, formerly white, has been gilded, burnished and glazed to serve as a beautiful backdrop for the liturgy.
