Community Reformed Church Zeeland , Michigan
Community Reformed Church in Zeeland , Michigan fills its mission - and its new sanctuary - more effectively with the completion of a new 31,000-square-foot Worship Center . The third addition to the original facility, the new Worship Center seats 1,200 people in a comfortable, functional and dramatic auditorium. Thoughtful use of poured concrete stepped seating and a precast balcony, enhanced with wood treatments and fabric, create a functional yet aesthetic facility. A deep soffit area, combined with a circular wall of large windows, allows ample natural light for the gathering area; a canopy provides sheltered drive up access to the sanctuary. Theatrical lighting, state-of-the-art sound system and a flexible stage not only enhance the Sunday service message-the combination of technology and expansive seating allows the church to attract public speaking engagements and concerts. The church counts 450 families in their congregation, ample reason in itself for a larger sanctuary, yet the new Worship Center is designed as much for the community at large. "The new Worship Center really wasn't built for those of us already here," said Jim Fortney, church administrator. "It is more for those who are looking for a place, and those who have not yet come to know the Lord. It's a beautiful, modern auditorium where people feel comfortable, regardless of the event." Fortney has recruited both the Grand Rapids Symphony, who held their Concert for Kids earlier this year, and the Holland Community Chorale for next season, both as a means of acquainting non-congregational residents with the church The church holds two Sunday services, one traditional and one more contemporary. In the past, the contemporary service was held in the gymnasium, growing from 50 to nearly 500 attendees. That meant 500 folding chairs.and no basketball. The gymnasium is now back to being used for its recreational purposes, while the original sanctuary is now used as a chapel for Bible study, smaller weddings and funerals. From brainstorming to open house, the project required about four years. "Lakewood Construction did an excellent job keeping us on budget and on schedule," said Fortney. "They were a real asset the whole way." Scott Nykerk, vice president of Lakewood Construction, points to the unique process for a church approaching new construction or renovation. Open communication is critical, including continuous planning input from the congregation. A church is a very dynamic, living organization, not just a building. "Like any organization planning for a new facility, the needs and wants are two different lists," said Nykerk. "But this is especially true with a diverse congregation, comprised of young and old; those who use the facility everyday and those who visit once a week. For example, the older members are concerned with access, while the younger members may need a nursery. Our goal is help our clients prioritize, work through the feasibility, yet at the same time, be thinking long term." Lakewood Construction, www.lakewoodinc.com , is a full-service construction company providing award winning design/build, construction management and general contracting services.
