What makes a successful, solid, and growing congregation?

An extensive study of U.S. congregations entitled, “Field Guide to U.S. Congregations: Who’s Going Where and Why” was released this year.

According to the study, “Congregations that have lots of people involved in many ways tend to be growing congregations. A clear identity and captivating vision for the future propel congregations forward. However broad or narrow the focus, congregations benefit from a deep understanding of who God is and what God is currently doing.”

The report identifies 10 characteristics of a strong congregation:

• Growing spiritually
• Meaningful worship
• Participation in the congregation
• Sense of belonging
• Caring for children and youth
• Focusing on the community
• Sharing faith
• Welcoming new people
• Empowering leadership
• Looking to the future

Of these qualities, which ones are you excelling at as a church? Which areas could use some work?

I’m always interested in hearing from you. You can reach me at jill@rpnmag.com.
